Numara Software's IT operations management cloud strategy raises bar

Acquisition of mobile device management leader, Fromdistance, completes phase 1 of Numara's ITOM cloud strategy, delivering integrated mobile device management, service management and endpoint life cycle management.

Cape Town, 24 Oct 2011

Numara Software today detailed its new strategy to deliver the first comprehensive cloud portfolio that seamlessly enables IT management to integrate mobile device, service and endpoint life cycle management, and present these ITOM capabilities to the IT support staff in a single pane of glass.

To support this vision, the company acquired Fromdistance, a leader in cloud-based mobile device management (MDM). Numara's complete cloud portfolio will be available in November.

“Companies have rushed to bring to the market cloud solutions that only address a small segment of IT management issues, with no one fully integrating service management and device management solutions; until now,” said Dave Hansen, Numara CEO.

“With the Fromdistance acquisition, and the integration of our cloud-based service and endpoint management technologies, we are raising the bar by delivering end-to-end, cloud-based IT operations management. This enables us to deliver device management tools, whether they are physical, virtual or mobile, as well as the essential service management tools that orchestrate the overall IT service.”

It's no secret that cloud and mobile are the two primary drivers in today's IT operations market. Earlier this year, Gartner projected that enterprises would spend $112 billion on cloud-related technologies in 2011, with an increase to $150 billion by 2013. The firm also reported that 428 million mobile devices were sold globally in the first quarter of 2011.

While many companies have embraced these market trends, the rush to be the first provider has resulted in a proliferation of cloud portfolios lacking certain capabilities. Disparate service offerings have driven customers to engage with different providers for their various cloud needs, adding complexity and cost. With the incorporation of Fromdistance in its cloud strategy, Numara addresses these issues head on.

Numara cloud solutions

Unlike competitive cloud offerings, which are specialised and highly fragmented, Numara's suite of highly integrated cloud solutions address the full portfolio of mobile device, endpoint life cycle and service management. Numara now provides medium to large enterprises with a single cloud-based solution that can manage, secure, control, track, remediate and retire all devices, whether they are servers, desktops, laptops, tablets or smartphones.

“It is inefficient and costly for companies to use multiple cloud providers for expertise in certain areas of IT management,” said Matt Dircks, vice-president of products at Numara.

“When it comes to deploying cloud solutions, customers are demanding a flexible, secure and integrated solution. Our new cloud portfolio and expanded capabilities have uniquely positioned us to be the single supplier of cloud solutions customers have requested. Additionally, we deliver this service via three tier 1 data centres in the United States, Europe and Far East, uniquely leveraging IPv6 and allowing us to provide class-leading speed, security and redundancy.”

Focused on managing and securing physical, virtual and mobile devices, as well as optimising the service management of all underpinning IT operations, Numara's cloud-based product offerings will be delivered starting in November.

Fromdistance acquisition

“We are very excited to join the Numara team,” said Jouko Vierum"aki, Fromdistance CEO and founder. “Incorporating our mature mobile device management technology into a broader IT operations management solution is the logical step for us, and one that will have great benefit to our respective customers.”

Fromdistance's technology has been identified by Gartner as a strong niche player in its April 2011 magic quadrant for mobile device management software. The acquisition will not only benefit existing Numara customers who can now manage and secure their mobile devices from a single pane of glass, but will also benefit Fromdistance customers and partners.

For the first time, companies will reap the benefits of being able to integrate their mobile solutions with service and endpoint life cycle management solutions. Vierum"aki will assume a leadership role in Numara's product group, where he and his team will also continue working with existing Fromdistance customers. The terms of the acquisition were not revealed.
