A four-day workshop has been staged in central Johannesburg to teach unemployed graduates how to create compelling digital CVs.

The workshop, called Make a Connection Digital Storytelling, was run by The Youth Development Trust (YDT), and facilitated by the US-based Pearson Foundation.

Make a Connection is part of a global 17-country initiative of the International Youth Foundation and Nokia to promote positive youth development.

"We are proud to be affiliated with this programme and hope that we can help the students acquire the skills necessary to further their career options," says Pearson Foundation facilitator Mark Nieker.

During the programme, students developed their skills in Adobe Premiere and picture scanning, and learnt to create their own digital CVs with digital video, which they then posted on the YDT Make a Connection Web site. Students were also each given 25 digital copies of their CV to hand out to potential employers.

This week`s three-day workshop followed a pilot project hosted in February by international representatives of the Pearson Foundation, Mark Nieker and Steve Brown. The programme is being run at the YDT computer centre in Newtown, Johannesburg.

Since its inception in other parts of SA, Make a Connection has trained over 500 graduates, with more than 70% receiving full-time employment and internship placements.

The next cycle of the Make a Connection three-month intake for Gauteng is scheduled to start on 13 September.
