Convergence already a reality

Leading businesses will be those that understand the power of a new world where every physical process and all analogue content is becoming digital, mobile, virtual and personal, transforming every aspect of life.

This is the view of Carly Fiorina, Hewlett-Packard CEO, who told delegates at last week`s mobility conference hosted by Nokia in Monaco that the past 25 years had merely been a warm-up lap. The world is finally entering the era of convergence in which everywhere, all the time information and services will be a reality, she said.

"This new era will transform the way we live and work in very profound ways and represents a great opportunity for new value creation to those companies and players who are willing to innovate quickly and take advantage of the transformation," she said.

"We are on the cusp of seismic changes in how we experience and interact with the world around us," declared Fiorina. She said these changes would dwarf everything that had happened before, making a reality the convergence of communications, computing and content.

"Companies that understand the power of this new world, the innovators who understand the opportunities this new world creates for new business, services and revenue, will be the companies that will succeed in building competitive advantage."

Fiorina said the new era was characterised by three important changes. "Every process is going digital, mobile, virtual and personal; things are becoming simpler, easier to use and more manageable; and increasingly value will be created by connecting things horizontally.

"Customers are going to flock to those companies that enable them to use their services in the most flexible and user-friendly manner," she advised. "Those companies that can create personalised services and a customer experience competitors cannot match will have the competitive-edge."
