Sangonet has launched the South African leg of the World Summit Award (WSA).
The award, held in cooperation with the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), is a global initiative that aims to select and promote the world's best e-content and creativity. Some 168 countries are taking part in the event.
"The WSA in SA is the first competition of its kind in the country emphasising the importance of content in bridging the digital divide," says David Barnard, Sangonet executive director.
"Our objective is to recognise, encourage and further disseminate SA's best e-content practices and products."
The competition is open to any company, organisation or individual in the content industry. It has eight categories: e-learning, e-culture, e-science, e-government, e-health, e-business, e-entertainment and e-inclusion.
"There is no financial reward to the competition," Barnard says. "However, we will do our very best to raise awareness about the South African winners once they have been selected."
The South African category winners will also be entered in the international competition, whose winners will be announced at the WSA gala on 16 November during the second phase of the WSIS in Tunis.
The closing date for the South African nominations is Tuesday, 26 July. Entry forms are available on the Sangonet Web site. For more information on WSA rules and evaluation criteria, visit www.wsa-award.org.
