Leaf Wireless acts against abuse with 16 Days of Activism Campaign

By Cameo Corporate Communications
Johannesburg, 27 Nov 2006

Leaf Wireless will once again implement and manage the SMS campaign for the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign 2006.

The 16 Days of Activism Campaign is an annual initiative that runs from 25 November, International Day of No Violence Against Women, till 10 December, International Human Rights Day.

Leaf Wireless will support the SMS campaign on a donor basis and every cent of the revenue generated by the campaign will be given to the 16 Days project.

The year 2006 marks the 16th anniversary of the 16 Days campaign, an annual, UN-endorsed project to raise awareness and funds to help eliminate the abuse of women and children.

A number of tools are used to achieve this, including the White Ribbon as a symbol of support for the campaign, a postcard pledge campaign, fundraising initiatives and the SMS campaign.

Says Quinton Leigh, Managing Director of Leaf Wireless: "The SMS campaign runs for the duration of the '16 Days' initiative, and will be supported this year by the major cellular networks. Members of the public will be asked to SMS the words 'Act Against Abuse' to 31616 at a cost of R5 per SMS."

All funds generated by the SMS campaign will be distributed to NGOs, CBOs and community-based projects that work with victims of violence and are focused on preventing and combating abuse against women and children. The projects are co-ordinated by the Foundation for Human Rights.

Leaf Wireless will manage the SMS process and monitor incoming donations. Leaf is supporting the project free of charge, and all information on funds raised through the project will be reflected and updated on the purpose-built Web page hosed at Leaf's Web site at www.leaf.co.za.

Concludes Leigh: "Leaf has years of experience with high volume SMS systems, both from the implementation and management sides. We are proud to be able to put this experience to good use by supporting this worthy cause. We are committed to pledging our resources to any such worthy causes which build a culture which truly embraces the care of women and children."
