Samsung donates R330 000 to charities following Samsung's first golf day

Johannesburg, 07 Mar 2007

If there is something missing from your life, give something to charity! This was the message conveyed at Samsung Mobile's first annual charity golf day, which was hosted in December last year.

The Samsung Charity Golf Day, which was held in the green, leafy suburb of Parktown at the Parkview golf course, raised in excess of R300 000. Samsung handed over R100 000 to MAD (Make-A-Difference Foundation) and R230 000 to Acres of Love earlier today at the Samsung offices, in Bryanston.

"The children of South Africa are the future of this country. Samsung Mobile Phones understand the importance of the fight against HIV/AIDS and the importance of education, and are proud to be in a position to assist such worthy causes," says James Munn, Vice President, Mobile Phones.

The Make-A-Difference Foundation is a Cape Town-based charity organisation, with its main focus on providing educational opportunities for talented less privileged children.

MAD was born out of a dream that Francois Pienaar and his friends had of making a difference in the lives of South Africans. "It is with the help of corporates such as Samsung Electronics that we are able to offer a future to a number of children including 40 youngsters on our individual and over 300 children on the broad-based educational programmes and change their lives forever," says Karien Winter, CEO MAD.

A donation of R100 000 was made to the MAD Foundation to assist its worthy cause.

A further R230 000 went to Acres of Love charity. "Acres of Love provides care, love and hope for abandoned and HIV positive babies and children. Through our forever homes these children receive the highest level of care to attain their full potential. We are thankful that this donation from Samsung Electronics will enable our respective organisations to collaboratively invest into the lives and the success of our children - the future business leaders in South Africa," says Gerda Audagnotti, CEO of Acres of Love.

The Samsung Golf Day was a company first, and was so successful that it will be added to the annual calendar. Samsung's key clients and guests spent a fun-filled day making their way through the course, and even had a few laughs at Samsung's crazy putting green where the cleverly designed balls went everywhere, except where you wanted it to go!

Following the prize-giving, the celebrity auction hosted by Fanie de Villiers raised a total of R94 250 with a Springbok rugby shirt signed by Francois Pienaar being sold for an amazing R8 500! Other items on auction were a ride around Kyalami racetrack in a Lamborghini, a Famous Grouse Whiskey tasting experience for 12 people and a family portrait by photographer Ryan Graham. In addition, Samsung products such as the innovative P910, which allows users to watch TV on their phone, as well as the stylish E250 mobile phone and Samsung air conditioners from Fourways aircon, were placed on auction.

"We all have a responsibility to the children of this country, as individuals and as corporates. Samsung would like to thank all our clients and business partners for their generosity of spirit and goodwill. With this donation, we are investing in the future of South Africa," concludes Ulanova Visser, General Manager Trade Marketing Samsung Mobile, who was the driving force behind this initiative.

Samsung would like to thank its sponsors, without which the golf day would not have been possible. Sponsors and hole sponsors include MTN; MTN Banking/MTN DA; World Net Logistics; Vodacom, Vodaworld; Altech Autopage Cellular; Bakhulu; Cellshack; Idea Lab; Leegra; Marie Brits; Mobile Solutions; Nashua Mobile.
