Novell schoolbooks introduce tomorrow's developers to Linux

Johannesburg, 19 Apr 2007

Novell today announced a set of schoolbooks to teach open source, Linux and basic programming skills to children aged 13-16. The books are available now through the Novell Academic Training Partner programme.

The set of books is titled "Get Ready for Open Source: SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10", and is written by Novell Training Services.

It introduces students to open source software, providing a clear and straightforward explanation on working with Linux and commonly-used open source applications like OpenOffice.org and Evolution, as well as writing basic shell scripts. The ultimate goal of the series is to give students a solid grounding in programming using the Mono/C# framework.

The books include practical exercises to aid learning, using Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) as a base system. Schools and other academic institutions that join the Novell Academic Training Partner program receive - among other benefits - 100 user licences on all Novell software including SLED.

The course is initially available in English, with translated versions in development. It is available now to all participants of the Novell Academic Training Partner Programme, priced at $30 for schools and $75 for universities.
