MS wants more storage market

Microsoft is on course to improve its share of the storage market that has long been dominated by EMC, Hewlett-Packard, NetApp and others, according to eWeek.

Ted Kummert, corporate VP of Microsoft`s data and storage platform division, said at Storage Networking World: "We`re making storage products that you can bet your business on."

He says Microsoft has already proved itself as the "general platform for all data" - through widespread adoption of Windows, Microsoft Office and Exchange - and is carrying this experience forward into the storage market.

Magnetic vortices aid data storage

Scientists have discovered the existence of right and left-handed magnetic vortices, which they believe could lead to the design of faster and more efficient hard disks, according to the European Commission Web site.

"The existence of a circular atomic traffic system of this sort has been presumed for several years," says Dr Manfred Fiebig, who is leading the research.

"In a study, we have actually discovered this kind of vortex field in a substance called lithium cobalt phosphate, and employed laser-optics to determine its direction."

BT goes green

BT has launched new `green` data storage consulting services as part of its evolving business in this area, according to IT Pro.

It has carried out research into the energy consumption, efficiency and carbon footprint of four of its own data centres, two of which are UK-based and two are located offshore in Holland.

Statistics shows that BT is the UK`s largest electricity consumer, using 0.7% of the country`s annual supply.
