Alan Knott-Craig Jr, managing director of wireless Internet access provider iBurst, resigned from the company yesterday.

According to an iBurst statement, Knott-Craig Jr recently had a child and decided to relocate his family to Stellenbosch.

Acting head of marketing at iBurst, Nicole Menego, says the move would see Knott-Craig Jr commuting to Johannesburg for five days in the week. It was concluded the commute would not allow him to effectively execute his duties as managing director.

“He decided it wouldn't be fair to his family or to iBurst,” says Menego.

He has tendered his resignation and will remain in place for four months while a replacement is found.

The company is unable to comment on whether Knott-Craig Jr will take up another position, or his future career plans.

Menego says Knott-Craig Jr has made recommendations to the board and the company will look for a replacement during the remaining four months of his term.

Son of former Vodacom CEO Alan Knott-Craig, Knott-Craig Jr joined iBurst as MD in 2006, after Blue Label Investments bought a stake in Wireless Business Solutions, iBurst's holding company.

He is currently out of the country on a trip arranged prior to his decision, and could not be reached for comment.

According to a Moneyweb report this morning, iBurst owner Galela Telecommunications is reverse listing into S&J Land Holdings in June.

Galela founder and owner Thami Mtshali declined to comment on Knott-Craig Jr's resignation.
