Acronis launches integrated deduplication, backup & recovery solution

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 boosts disaster recovery in virtual environments.

Johannesburg, 15 Jul 2009

Acronis is today launching Acronis Backup & Recovery 10, a portfolio of disaster recovery products that combine data deduplication, enhanced support for virtual environments, and centralised management features based on the vendor's leading disk imaging and bare metal technology.

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 is the next generation of the vendor's Acronis True Image solution. It offers data deduplication, a technology which can cut storage requirements by up to 90% by eliminating backup copies of redundant data, but until now has been reserved for larger organisations due to its high cost.

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 offers the industry's most cost-effectivesoftware deduplication solution, without the need to purchase additional hardware.

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 is capable of backing up and restoring any Microsoft or Linux-based servers or workstations to their full operating state prior to any failure. This comprises the entire hard disk, including operating system, or individual applications, updates, settings, and data. By adding new capabilities to its products, Acronis also allows small, medium, and large organisations to simply automate backup and disaster recovery processes across both physical and virtual environments, including physical to virtual migration capabilities, in a single solution.

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 supports virtual environments from VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix Xensource and Parallels. The product includes a new host-based Virtual Machine (VM) backup agent, enabling backup and restore of live VMs through VMware ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V APIs without installing a client in each VM.

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 allows personnel and timesavings with a centralised, policy-based management for distributed IT systems and infrastructures. The solution has the ability to scale to thousands of machines, enabling an IT administrator to design and execute a backup strategy around the globe and match the growth of a business.

"IT buyers today are demanding that backup and recovery solutions deliver the value that comes from greater efficiency, manageability, and scalability," said Dave Russell, research vice-president, Gartner. "The common denominator is that organisations, regardless of size, are striving to maximise the impact of their technology initiatives. They will require such important features as using one product for both virtual and physical backup, data deduplication for faster and more efficient backups, and the ability to manage every backup processes from a single console.”

“Acronis has expanded its market focus to better address the needs of large organisations while continuing to deliver unprecedented features and functions for small and medium-size companies,” said Jason Donahue, Acronis President and CEO. “Acronis is rebranding the entire product line to reinforce that Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 delivers significantly more capability than our already successful Acronis True Image family. At the same time, Acronis remains the industry's easiest-to-use backup and recovery application.”

Small and medium-sized businesses can now take advantage of enterprise-class services at a very affordable price, in an easy-to-use package for backing up and recovering critical data to or from disk, ftp, optical and tape devices at industry-leading speeds. Restoring a complete system, PC, workstation, or server, can be done in minutes, not hours or days.

At a time when organisations are reducing spend on hardware, Acronis allows administrators to leverage existing platforms without further investment. With the Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 Universal Restore option, systems can be restored to dissimilar hardware, eliminating the need to acquire identical standby hardware.
