Local IT distributor, Rectron, has entered into a partnership with MIO whereby Rectron will distribute MIO's C510z Portable Navigation Device as well as the P550 Personal Digital Assistant throughout South Africa.
Mio Technology is an industry-leading company with operations in Taiwan, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, United States, and Europe. Mio's product range includes personal navigation devices (PND), personal digital assistants (PDAs) and smartphones. The mapping software that comes standard with both the C510z and the P550 has been specifically tailored for the South African market and includes maps of South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Swaziland.
"Rectron has an extremely large and diverse customer base, and plans to launch this product in the South African market very aggressively," says Zandre Rudolph, general manager at Rectron. "In terms of adding value to the MIO product offering, Rectron will be the official service and repair centre for the MIO products we are distributing. In this way, Rectron will be able to add value not only by positioning MIO's product competitively in the South African market, but also by supplying excellent back up services should any problems occur with the devices."
During December Mio Technology, for the first time, took the leading position with a 37% market share in PND sales during the holiday season. These results demonstrate that Mio Technology is very capable of garnering market share in the North American GPS market, a factor which translates well when it comes to growing market share in South Africa.
"MIO products are sold in over 50 countries worldwide and have the third highest PDA market share in the world, but what really distinguishes the brand is the fact that the brand has shown continued growth per quarter since 2004, whereas the other global PDA brands have remained largely static over the last three years. For these reasons, Rectron is excited about having the MIO brand on board, and anticipates a great year for MIO in South Africa in 2007," concludes Rudolph.
