Novell`s SUSE Linux, IBM, HP set performance benchmark world record

Novell`s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 and IBM DB2 Universal Database 8.1 set TPC-C price-performance benchmark world record on HP hardware

Johannesburg, 04 Aug 2004

Novell`s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 has set the new standard for TPC-C price-performance, beating out proprietary operating systems to establish a new world record in price performance.

The first benchmark with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 and IBM DB2 Universal Database Express Edition set a new world record for best price-performance with $1.61/tpmC (transactions per minute) on an HP ProLiant Server. The result demonstrates the ability of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server to handle corporate customers` requirements in a high performing, yet cost-effective, way.

"The new world record clearly demonstrates the strengths of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 - it is the right choice for customers who are looking for great performance, while still reducing costs, in mission-critical deployments," said Allison Singh, systems engineering manager at Novell SA. "DB2 Universal Database and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 deliver a compelling value to even small and medium-sized businesses that want to lower their cost of ownership and benefit from the exceptional stability, performance and security of Linux."

"This new result further extends the leadership DB2 Universal Database has held in this price-performance metric since April 2004," said Gary Schneider, director, Linux Business Development, IBM Information Management. "As proven here, the combination of DB2 Universal Database and Novell`s SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 provides an exciting alternative for anyone seeking to eliminate their reliance on proprietary platforms or higher-priced database software."

Benchmark results:

* HP ProLiant ML350T03 (3.06GHz Intel Xeon w/512 K Cache)
* DB2 UDB Express Edition
* SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9
* Metrics: 18 661 tpmC, $1.61/tpmC

TPC-C

TPC-C is an OLTP (online transaction processing) benchmark developed by the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC). The TPC-C benchmark defines a rigorous standard for calculating performance and price-performance measured by transaction per minute (tpmC) and $/tpmC, respectively.
