Confident as Dell

Dell has launched two OptiPlex desktop computers for the medium and large enterprise markets in an international webcast from Monte Carlo in Monaco.

"The launch of the OptiPlex GX520 and the GX620 proves that Dell is continuing to invest in the desktop, which we believe makes us unique," said Sam Burd, director of desktop product marketing in Dell`s client product group.

"The mobile corporate market is growing very rapidly, but there is still a very stable desktop market. The desktop remains for many companies a cost-effective tool for making staff productive."

Burd told his audience that while both platforms were suited for the mainstream desktop market and aimed at meeting corporate expectations, the GX620 had additional hardware security features and was designed to provide greater investment protection.

"OptiPlex computers are designed to deliver reduced cost of ownership and the highest value in the long-term," he said.

The GX520 and GX620 both feature a new cooling system, hard drive mounts to reduce vibration, diagnostics for check of system status, accessible front USB ports, and components that can be removed without tools for quick upgrades and maintenance.

In making the announcement, Burd pledged Dell would extend its environmental commitment and continue its strategy of basing products on customer-centric industrial design principles.

The new OptiPlex desktops both feature a lead-free chassis, motherboard and power supply, putting Dell ahead of deadlines set by recent environmental protection laws.

Burd emphasised that in Dell`s view the desktop market was still "huge", based on forecasts of Dell desktop sales of around 130 million in 2005, and therefore desktops remained at the core of Dell`s business.

International Data Corporation research shows that Dell`s share of the desktop market grew from around 5% in 1996, to almost 20% by the end of the first quarter of this year.

"We have to continue delivering the right solution to meet market needs if we are to maintain Dell`s momentum," said Burd.
