Electronic risk management technology solutions provider IDtek is installing a biometric identity control system in the restricted personnel areas of Johannesburg International Airport (JIA).
MD Julian Thorrold says IDtek was awarded the R250 000 contract by Airports Company SA (ACSA) to install Sagem`s fingerprint biometric technology. The technology will authenticate more than 600 airport employees, permitting access to secure areas of the airport`s Air Traffic Navigation Control Department.
In terms of the contract, IDtek started the installation last week, Thorrold says. The biometric technology will enforce security and increase physical access control reliability, while minimising personnel access to restricted working areas of the airport.
The contract was awarded to IDtek following a successful trial month, where the technology was deployed at JIA on a limited basis. Thorrold says ACSA then put out a tender for the complete installation that attracted three local bidders.
The airport security systems are designed to leverage Sagem`s core strengths in fingerprint biometric recognition technology and data encryption, says IDtek sales manager Manica Boshoff.
The equipment being installed is Sagem Morpho - best known for automating fingerprint identification systems in state, local and law enforcement agencies throughout SA, she says.
Some of Sagem`s larger clients include the FBI, Interpol and the United Nations, Boshoff says. Locally, Sagem`s clients include the South African Police Service and the Department of Social Development, which pays about three million pensions every month.
