Despite the increased threat to mobile devices, 64% of businesses worldwide are still unprotected, says NetXactics, the South African distributor of Sophos.

However, NetXactics CEO Brett Myroff says although South African companies have been slower to adopt mobile devices due to cost, they tend to be more diligent about securing these devices. Local companies are also good when it comes to securing networks, he adds.

"The use of smart phones and PDAs is on the rise, and, if unprotected, these devices can give hackers a route into a seemingly well-defended network," warns Myroff.

Although the number of mobile threats is still small compared with the more commonly encountered Windows-specific malware, Myroff advises that system administrators should be looking to defend all points of entry into their organisation.
