The sixth annual Audio Video Appliance Expo 2008 kicked off at the Sandton Convention Centre over the weekend.

The expo showcased some of the new gadgets and home appliances to come into the market. In addition, the event featured a digital photography workshop.

Tracy Gruar, CEO of North East Publishing, the organiser of the event, says the expo has grown over the years: “We had 20 new exhibitors this year, and in total, the expo had approximately 75 exhibitors. The high-definition LCDs and the digital photography category were very popular this year.

“Every year, our exhibitors make more of an effort, which at the end of the day the public appreciates. Just about every product received positive attention, even on our appliance side. People can come to the expo in an unpressurised environment and can interact with the exhibitors. They'll get a hands-on feel about the latest technology that is out there and can compare it with other products.”

The Audio Video Appliance Expo has been in existence for five years, and gives consumers the opportunity to touch, listen to and view popular lifestyle and audiovisual technology.

Gruar says the market has seen a growth in lifestyle products, with more people showing interest in gadgets and digital home appliances.

Some of the highlights of the event included the staging of the Apple iPhone, Archos' digital entertainment system and the MvixBOX WDN - 2000 network attached media server. In addition, Harmon Group showcased its latest Infinity 3D home entertainment system.
