Qatar project drives e-learning

Qatar is playing a key role in introducing learning into the lives of the visually-impaired in developing communities across the world, thanks to an initiative from Carnegie Mellon University, says The Gulf Times.

The Pittsburgh and Qatar campuses are spearheading a Braille Tutor project, which explores how computing technology can be utilised to teach Braille writing while providing immediate audio feedback.

The Braille Tutor consists of an electronic slate and wireless stylus that is connected to a computer through a USB cable. As the student writes each letter on the slate with the stylus, the tutor provides immediate audio feedback by repeating the written letters and words.

The conference, to be held in Dakar, Senegal from 27 to 29 May, will convene ICT practitioners, experts, and others interested in using information technology to revolutionise and improve educational and training opportunities.

It is one of the largest e-learning conferences in Africa, held in French and English, and organised by Hoffmann and Reif Consultants, an ICT development company.
