MultiChoice has warned its customers that it was one of the three South African companies that was targeted in a phishing attack on Friday.

Clients of insurance giant Mutual and Federal and another unnamed company were targeted by e-mails aiming to solicit information, such as online passwords and banking details, by luring them to bogus sites appearing as those of banks or businesses.

MultiChoice this morning sent out a warning to subscribers not to respond to any unsolicited e-mail, saying: "We are aware of an e-mail claiming to come from MultiChoice targeting South African consumers. We would like to warn all recipients to ignore and delete any such unsolicited communication.

"Many local and global companies have been targeted by these international syndicates, with the intention of obtaining customers` personal details; this is universally known as identity theft," the warning added.

MultiChoice was not available for comment at the time of publication.

Yesterday, Standard Bank said it successfully blocked a phishing attack suspected to have originated in the Eastern Bloc.

Reacting to the attacks, Information Security Group of Southern Africa chairman Graig Rosewarne said last week that SA is likely to increasingly become a target for phishing attacks, as many companies, specifically mid-sized businesses, are seen as soft targets.

"The UK and US markets are mostly seen as overtraded. SA, being the richest country on the continent could attract international syndicates that are likely to target companies that have few security measures in place and often no dedicated security personnel."
