Google SA is keeping its local strategy and plans for the company's movement for the next year out of the public eye.

"We are not really talking to the media at the moment. I will not be able to talk about the company's strategy and our plans for the year," says Google SA country head Stafford Masie.

The company has traditionally been quiet about its local operations, dropping only hints of plans.

During a conference hosted by MyADSL, in November, Google SA said it planned to announce the establishment of a local point of presence, giving South African users access to local servers.

"We are going to establish a point of presence in this country, which means the international bandwidth problem is solved. There will be a big announcement in a month," Masie said at the time.

He said Google in SA would put its weight behind the push for broadband access. "We want to see pervasive access, and we want to see costs go down. I intend to interact with all stakeholders, highlighting real-world examples of the benefits of broadband access."

The announcement regarding the company's local server farm has not yet been made.

At the conference, Masie said he expected a full team to be in place at Google SA by January and the official launch of the local arm to take place in February.
