Java, WebSphere support for Compuware STROBE APM solution

Johannesburg, 30 May 2003

Compuware Corporation has added enhanced automation and support for Java Virtual Machine and IBM Websphere to its STROBE and iSTROBE Application Performance Management (APM) software.

By leveraging an APM solution, organisations can meet the challenges of controlling costs, satisfying customers and supporting corporate growth, while reducing the demand their applications make for system resources.

STROBE 3.0 blends performance measurement with performance analysis to pinpoint precise sources of application resource demands, says Salome Kwant, product manager at Compuware SA. "STROBE also provides information that enables users to improve transaction response times and shorten batch windows during any lifecycle phase," she adds.

The addition of Java Virtual Machine support allows organisations to better understand and improve the performance of their Java applications that are running under CICS, batch and WebSphere - which may call the DB2 database - during development and production.

iStrobe 1.1 provides a Web-browser interface into the STROBE APM software, helping users throughout the IT organisation quickly find and solve performance problems. "iSTROBE`s performance hints and tips help users understand why performance problems are occurring and how they might be solved," explains Kwant.

Also new in iSTROBE 1.1 is complete STROBE subsystem support, as well as new file-management capabilities that help users better manage their profiles.

Kwant points out that in today`s tight economy, executives are looking for cost reduction opportunities.

"This is a great time to put some focus on tuning your application performance, in order to consolidate platforms, delay upgrades and provide the application infrastructure for the portal and Web services that will be drawing on mainframe resources in the near future," she says.

"An integrated application performance management solution provides the tools and supports the practices you need in order to achieve the short- and long-term gains of well-tuned applications."

According to Kwant, STROBE`s Java support is unique in that it provides information on Java as well as other mainframe resources and subsystems being used by the application including WebSphere, CICS and DB2.

"Its low-density sampling technology ensures low overhead and allows it to be used with confidence in production and throughout the application lifecycle," she concludes.
