Sun Microsystems has announced a new set of developer initiatives that combine hardware, software and support services to extend the reach of its developer programmes. The announcements include two new levels of membership in the Sun Developer Network - Sun Developer Network Standard and Sun Developer Network Professional - and two new developer promotions.
An Apple developer promotion offers Sun Java Studio Creator for Mac OS X; a one year Sun Developer Network Standard membership; and Sun's NetBeans integrated development environment (IDE) for the Mac OS X environment at no charge for developers who purchase an Apple 15- or 17-inch PowerBook G4 laptop or PowerMac G5 system. Meanwhile, a free high performance Sun AMD Opteron processor-based workstation will be supplied to new Sun Developer Network members who purchase a three-year Sun Java Studio Enterprise software subscription.
"These offerings will help keep developers on the cutting edge of Java technology and provide access to the industry's most complete offering of Java technology-based products, programs, information, tools and equipment," says Sean O'Hare, Java systems engineer at Sun Microsystems SA.
"With a variety of options for a broad range of developers, from students just starting out, to the most sophisticated enterprise developers, Sun is augmenting its broad product set with a full developer support infrastructure."
Sun Developer Network Standard and Sun Developer Network Professional are two new membership levels that offer developers access to a rich array of tools, products and programmes.
At a cost of US$99 per developer per year, the new Sun Developer Network Standard membership level provides a complete programme experience to help developers successfully build Web applications in minutes. Sun Developer Network Professional includes additional premium content and support elements at a cost of US$699 per developer per year.
"In addition, developers signing up for either one of these levels receive Java Studio Creator, the first pure Java visual development tool, at no cost," adds O'Hare.
