Keeping an eye on Linux

Johannesburg, 20 Jan 2005

Accounting and payroll application developer Softline Pastel has joined the increasing number of software development houses that have started hedging their bets by developing for Linux as well as Microsoft Windows.

"We have always batted with Microsoft, but for the first time we are seeing the possibility of an alternative being real, to the extent that 30% of the user base may move to a Linux platform," says Grant Lloyd, Softline Pastel operations director.

"We don't see any technology ever taking Microsoft out of the game, but Softline Pastel is exploring alternatives because the 30% that is likely to move will have a significant impact on the accounting and payroll application market," says Lloyd.

Although admitting it is an expensive strategy to execute against, Lloyd says Softline Pastel is working on a Java solution in addition to Microsoft's .Net technology in case the Linux or non-Microsoft movement really takes off.

"We need to recognise that Linux is starting to make a big move, particularly in Africa, where the lower acquisition costs and hardware requirements are attractive," says Lloyd.

"Africa is an important market for Softline Pastel and the lower cost of Linux means customers have proportionately more money to spend on applications," Lloyd points out. "We see Linux lurking and it's something software developers need to be aware of."
