TAB, the betting division of Phumelela Gaming and Leisure, has introduced a GPRS betting application that will allow punters to place bets either via enabled cellphones or pocket PCs from any location with GSM cell coverage.

Until recently, the only way customers could place bets via cellphone was by conventional telephone betting.

The new betting channel was developed by e-commerce company Digital Mall and has been approved by the South African Bureau of Standards and the Gauteng Gambling Board.

GPRS betting has significant cost advantages compared to telephone betting, as once the application has been downloaded from www.tabonline.co.za, it can cost a user as little as R1 to R2 to place 50 bets, says Phumelela`s Betting and Compliance executive director Mpho Ramafalo.
