Software professionals from business and higher educational institutions in Gauteng have set up a second South African chapter of the international software process improvement network (SPIN).
The first local SPIN was set up in Cape Town in May 2005. It is based on a concept initiated by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, in the US.
Although the SEI continues to provide support for over 160 chapters of SPIN around the world, each group operates independently.
"SPINs are being set up all over the world because the opportunity to interact with other professionals with the same interest is invaluable," says Gauteng SPIN committee chairperson Estelle Trengove.
The Gauteng SPIN is working closely with the Johannesburg Centre for Software Engineering (JCSE), which is an official partner of the SEI in Africa.
"One of the JCSE`s objectives is to create a pre-competitive space through SPINs, where people from the software sector can network and discuss changes in the industry and how they affect the sector into the future," says Barry Dwolatzky, JCSE academic director.
