8ta has introduced a self-service application for iPad users that will assist its prepaid and contract customers to manage their data needs.

The app, announced by Telkom's mobile arm yesterday, is available for free download from the Apple App Store. It will enable users to manage airtime and data bundle balances, redeem airtime vouchers, top-up online as well as purchase data bundles at any time.

Telkom's senior managing executive, Amith Maharaj, says the app was created as a tool to make data more accessible and convenient, given the increasing need for data in SA. “We also intend to launch similar apps for other platforms, such as Android, in the near future.”

The launch of the 8ta Data app, says Maharaj, follows the introduction of a range of data plans, for the latest iPad, that allow customers to connect to its 3G network. He says the mobile operator, SA's fourth, was selected by Apple last year to provide dedicated prepaid iPad data plans.

“Bill shock is a real problem for data users and it is our intention to improve functionality on our apps and portals to avoid this problem.”
