The University of South Africa (UNISA) will host its first TEDx event on 30 September, the public distance education institute has announced.

The TEDx programme is a grassroots initiative that’s been created in the spirit of the global non-profit, TED’s, overall mission to research and discover “ideas worth spreading”. TEDx are independently-run events to help share ideas in communities around the world. These events typically include live speakers and recorded TED Talks, and are organised under a free licence granted by TED.

The strictly online-only event is titled TEDxUniversityOfSouthAfrica, and will be held under the theme: “Elephant in the Room”. Organisers say the event is free of charge for attendees.

The speaker line-up includes Hetty Boachie-Yiadom, entrepreneur and UNISA alumni; Rianette Leibowitz, cyber safety change agent; professor Hossana Twinomurinzi, researcher and lecturer within the College of Science, Engineering and Technology at UNISA; and Vusi Thembekwayo, venture capitalist and entrepreneur.

Its organisers say TEDxUniversityOfSouthAfrica is a licensed event under TED, adding that it will cover topics such as COVID-19, cyber bullying and the future of South Africa.

“As we are set to deliver ideas worth spreading that will delight, surprise and inspire, our TEDx event will champion topics that affect students and South Africa at large, to stimulate dialogue in our communities to actionable solutions from our presenters.

“Anticipate being inspired and driven to think, observe and analyse content differently, with fresh insight, newly inspired perspective and perception that will fan the flames of ideas worth spreading.”

The team bringing TEDx to UNISA is led by Kudakwashe Mazhetese, an entrepreneur and civil engineering student at the university.
