FTI to co-sponsor Edward de Bono Thinking Workshop in Cape Town

By Faculty Training Institute
Cape Town, 08 Sept 2010

Faculty Training Institute, a leading provider of training for business analysts, enterprise architects, project managers and test analysts in SA, is to co-sponsor the Progress Conference with Edward de Bono in Cape Town in October 2010.

Dr De Bono is the world's leading authority on thinking. The thinking skills techniques he has developed, including lateral thinking, Six Thinking Hats and parallel thinking, are widely recognised and used by organisations around the globe to unblock barriers to effective thinking, and to generate creative solutions to business problems.

Faculty Training Institute has a 21-year track record of providing training excellence and skills development for professionals who conduct knowledge work. This community comprises not only professional individuals within the IT industry but also individuals from knowledge domains where high order thinking and the ability to innovate and solve problems is prized.

"In conjunction with the UCT Graduate School of Business and the Business Results Group, we are proud to be associated with this workshop", says Steve Erlank, managing director of FTI. "Thinking skills lie at the heart of all of the courses we teach, and Dr de Bono has for many years been a pioneer in this area. The conference provides an unsurpassed opportunity for South African business leaders and professionals to benefit from the insights of Dr de Bono. Creative problem solving skills are embedded in the job descriptions of many of the professionals we teach. Business analysts are required to apply deep questioning and probing skills in eliciting requirements, and need to be creative in defining the business solutions needed to meet these requirements. Test analysts must apply lateral thinking techniques in developing comprehensive test cases that will drive up system quality. Project managers may have to facilitate a group of diverse stakeholders towards a consensus. Dr de Bono's work presents many powerful techniques that are invaluable for these knowledge professionals."

So important are thinking skills to some of these roles that they are embedded in the various bodies of knowledge of the profession itself. The International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) includes problem solving and creativity as required skills in the fundamentals knowledge area of the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK).

Although thinking skills form part of all of its programmes, FTI now offers Six Thinking Hats training through its recently introduced Academy of Thinking, and will be offering course launch specials at the conference.

"The two-day Six Thinking Hats workshop teaches parallel thinking as an alternative to argument. Parallel thinking guides thought processes in one direction at a time so we can effectively analyse issues, generate new ideas, and make better decisions" says Alex Noel, accredited Six Thinking Hats facilitator. "Six Thinking Hats uses coloured hats as a metaphor to modify thinking behaviours. This helps individuals and groups put emotion, opinions, negativity and ego aside so that they can focus on effective problem solving and consensus reaching."

Faculty Training Institute

Faculty Training Institute (FTI) is a private training company that specialises in offering world-class career-oriented training courses for professional knowledge workers, mainly in the corporate world. Focusing on mid-career rather than entry-level training, FTI specialises in Project Management, Business Analysis, Systems Analysis, Technical Writing, IT Management, Enterprise Architecture, and Technical Writing Training. It offers a variety of training options, including public or in-house, part-time or full-time courses.

FTI was founded in 1989 by five experienced lecturers from the Department of Information Systems at the University of Cape Town, who perceived a gap between the technical or entry level training offered by most private training companies, and the longer degree programmes offered by tertiary institutions. During the past 20 years FTI has expanded its successful product offerings from the initial two Diploma courses into growing range of diplomas and short courses that serve the career needs of corporate South Africa.

In October 2006 FTI was awarded Charter Endorsed Education Provider (EEP) status with the International Institute for Business Analysis (IIBA(r)). It is one of a handful of training organisations worldwide who have achieved this status. FTI has received full accreditation from ISETT SETA.
