Chinese manufacturer Huawei has unveiled the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS, aimed at professionals who want the same experience of a luxury vehicle in their smartphones.

The stand-out features of the top-of-the range device include storage space of up to 512GB and a fingerprint sensor built into the screen.

Huawei says prices in Europe for the 512GB device will start at 2 095 euro, which is slightly higher than R30 000, but South Africans can expect to pay more than this when the device is available in the country due to import costs and taxes.

The new luxury smartphone was revealed this week at Huawei's 'See Mooore' event, in Paris, after the announcement of two new smartphones in its P-series range: the P20 and P20 Pro.

The Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS is essentially an upgraded P20 Pro, as it has the same triple-camera set-up and artificial intelligence integration.

The camera configuration, co-engineered with Leica, comprises a 40MP RGB sensor, a 20MP monochrome sensor and an 8MP sensor with a 3X telephoto lens.

The Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS has two fingerprint sensors, one built into the screen in the front and a physical button on the back. The in-screen fingerprint sensor allows users to wake up the device by floating their finger above the display, while touching the sensor unlocks the phone. The back fingerprint sensor can also be used to unlock the device or access a second, secure space on the smartphone.

The display is a 6-inch OLED 2K curved-at-the-sides screen, a feature first seen on rival Samsung smartphones.

The device has a 4 000mAh battery with super charge capabilities and is the first Huawei flagship to enable quick wireless charging.

The device will be available in either black or red.

It is not yet clear which of the devices launched this week by Huawei will be made available in SA, and how much they will cost locally. This will be revealed at the South African launch next week, on 5 April.
