Lenovo has previewed what it calls the world's first foldable PC, with a screen that can be folded much in the same way as the new Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X.

The new machine will be part of Lenovo's flagship ThinkPad X1 range and will arrive next year, although the company did not specify exactly when, or for how much the device will retail.

According to the company, the laptops were made for the "highly-mobile, tech-savvy professionals who demand the best tools", adding that the portable and flexible design will not impact on productivity or reliability. "The ThinkPad will combine laptop productivity with smartphone portability.

"This is not a phone, tablet, or familiar hybrid; this is a fully-fledged laptop with a foldable screen," Lenovo said.

The device features an OLED 2K display made in collaboration with LG Display that can fold in half, reducing its width by 50%. It is powered by Intel, and will come with Windows.

While it may seem gimmicky, the laptop has some compelling use cases. It can be folded into a book to read a novel online or catch up on social media, unfolded and propped up for large-screen viewing of movies, news or TV shows, or changed into a 'clamshell' form factor to type e-mails and do other work.

It can also be docked into a multi-monitor setup, or used as a full-screen tablet to take notes with the pen provided.
