Government and industry need to work together to develop the necessary skills that will prepare South Africans for the fourth industrial revolution.

This is the word from science and technology minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts to address the wave of technological changes.

Government officials, including president Cyril Ramaphosa, have stressed the importance of combining resources and expertise in order to seize the opportunities brought on by Industry 4.0.

In June, the World Economic Forum (WEF) announced plans to open fourth industrial revolution centres across various countries, including SA, in the coming year. The centres, said WEF, are hubs for public-private collaboration to shape the development and application of emerging technologies.

Kubayi-Ngubane is of the view that leadership in both the public and private sectors must ensure the new age of developments results in a prosperous society.

According to the minister, South Africa is getting to grips with the fourth industrial revolution, although there is still a lot more to be done.

"As a nation, we will need to develop the capabilities to manage technology, innovation and people so that we grow our national system of innovation."
