Lucent announces DSP chip family

Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Group has announced the highest-performing digital signal processor (DSP) system-on-a-chip family for next-generation Internet and wireless networks.

Lucent says the new DSP product family will enable the doubling of Internet chip capacity. It also offers more than four times today`s typical voice and data channels per chip for wireless switches, voice over Internet Protocol gateways and remote access servers.

Lucent claims that, by offering a faster and easier way for design engineers to write software for their DSP-based equipment, its chip solutions will shave 50% or more off the time required to develop and deliver to market equipment such as wireless base stations, telephone central office switching systems, digital subscriber line modems and voice over IP gateways.

Lucent`s StarPro product family is based on modular DSP platform technology, featuring Daytona, a high-speed semiconductor bus technology developed by Bell Labs. The platform allows equipment manufacturers to re-use DSP software and hardware to deliver product derivatives and enhancements much faster, according to Lucent.

"Lucent`s powerful new DSP platform addresses a critical market need - to get high-end DSP-based products to market much faster and easier," says Will Strauss, president of Forward Concepts, a DSP market research firm. "The StarPro chip family also sets a new high in performance and channel density on a single chip."

"Using a common platform, our customers can build a multitude of different DSP-based products spanning the whole communications chain from wireless and Internet infrastructure to access terminals and high capacity network transport systems," adds Sohail Khan, president of the Integrated Circuits Division of Lucent`s Microelectronics Group.

StarPro 2000 is the first chip in the StarPro DSP family and the first Lucent chip based on the StarCore SC140 DSP architecture announced last year.
