Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Communications has called on the public, institutions and interested parties to nominate candidates to serve on the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) board.

Boyce Maneli, chairperson of the communications committee, says the board needs to fill four vacancies.

In order to serve on the board, a candidate should be a South African citizen permanently residing in the country and committed to fairness, freedom of expression, openness and accountability, as well as a representative of a broad cross-section of the population of the republic, explains Maneli.

“Candidates should possess suitable qualifications, expertise and experience in the fields of, amongst others, community media, social, labour and development issues, economics, financial management and funding.

“Furthermore, they should also be experienced in the fields of advertising and marketing, journalism and broadcast programming, media research, media training, literacy and education, media law and information and communication technology policy, or any other related expertise and qualifications.”

The MDDA, one of the entities the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies oversees, promotes and assists in the development of community media and small commercial media in SA and the transformation of the media, by providing financial and capacity-building support in terms of the MDDA Act No 14 of 2002.

It also aims to raise public awareness with regard to media development and diversity issues, and encourage media literacy and a culture of reading.

The committee indicates written nominations must contain the full name and address of the individual or institution making a nomination, the nominee’s signed acceptance of the nomination and his or her curriculum vitae, with information including full name, ID number, gender, contact address, telephone and fax numbers, as well as e-mail address; previous experience which quotes the dates and organisations concerned; and certified copies of academic qualifications and identity document.

The closing date for nominations is Friday, 14 February at 16:00. No late submissions will be considered, the committee warns.
