What started out more than half a century ago as a designer and supplier of aircraft and missile components has today transformed to bring you some of the latest in motion-control technology. Expanding into industrial machinery over the years, Moog today offers material handling, metal forming, plastics, packaging and steel solutions.

As a top-quality provider, the Moog Industrial Group looked to a top-quality supplier when tackling a recent challenge for an international customer operating in the mining industry. The system was to be designed, developed and assembled local, and was then to be exported. With this in mind, partnering with a global company such as Rittal was a natural fit for Moog Industrial Group.

Operating since 1961 and founded in Germany, Rittal has continuously evolved as the world's leading systems provider to bring its customers the highest quality solutions. Rittal delivers on enclosures, power distribution, climate control, IT infrastructure and software and services, which can today be found around the world.

Willie Steyn from Moog Industrial Group explains that local and global service, support and stock availability played a key role in the selection of Rittal as their preferred supplier for this project. "There were several key requirements for this project, but the major deciding factors were down to quality, expertise, availability and support, both locally and internationally,"

Steyn adds: "Moog was tasked with developing and installing a containerised motor control centre and control room for a mobile mining sorter machine application. We needed to make use of various components and wanted to streamline by using one supplier for all of our requirements, hence we turned to Rittal South Africa".

As a partner to the mining industry, Donald Hendry from Rittal South Africa explains that the team had the expertise, price support and solutions to match the brief. "This particular application required various components: essentially, we needed to offer 'applications within applications'," he explains.

"Rittal was able to supply standard items for easy availability of parts around the globe. We supplied Ri4power distribution, an AE stainless steel field control panel as well as a top therm chiller for this particular application," says Hendry.

In terms of the design details, the system height was 2.2m and 600mm deep with a 200mm plinth. The motor control centre design was designed with field modules, partial cubicles and cable and termination chambers. A standard TS type enclosure was used with a PLC bayed on the Ri4power solution.
