MTC first to bring iPhone 4S to Namibia and southern Africa

After landing the iPhone4 in Namibia over two years ago, MTC now takes pride in being the first to bring the upgraded iPhone 4S version of the iPhone to Namibia and to southern Africa.

After reports that other operators will only start selling the iPhone 4S as from 16 December 2011, MTC has officially become the first operator in the region to retail the much-acclaimed smartphone to its customers.

Similar to its predecessor, the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S is contained in a beautiful enclosure that is a mere 9.3 millimetres thin. It is still the sleekest and thinnest smartphone in the world, with a higher resolution display than the iPhone 4. According to Apple, the iPhone 4S promises improved battery life, a better camera (eight megapixel with 1 080p video recording), and 14.4Mbps HSPA. The iPhone 4S also boasts a voice control system called Siri.

The introduction of the iPhone 4S to Namibia is another feather in the cap for MTC, which was also the first to introduce Apple's iPad and iPad 2 in Namibia and in southern Africa.

MTC's Chief Human Capital and Corporate Affairs Officer, Tim Ekandjo, said the demand and uptake of the iPhone 4S was phenomenal. He said initially, the iPhone 4S was offered to the first 200 customers who registered on its e-commerce platform. The iPhone 4S is now available on MTC's Connect SmartPhone package, subject to payment of a once-off connection fee of N$218, an extra payment of N$2 999, and a monthly fee of N$399 per month for 24 months. In return for that, customers get 300 free SMSes, 600 free minutes and 600 free data megabytes (MB).

Ekandjo said the introduction of the iPhone 4S ahead of other operators testifies to its robust procurement strategies, which are aimed at not only giving the customers the best available technology, but also to source and land products in Namibia at the shortest possible time.

“We are proud that yet again, we have been able to introduce iPhone 4S in a matter of months after its unveiling. We continue to scour the market for the best, innovative and affordable products to keep our country and our people abreast of technological developments,” Ekandjo said.

MTC (Mobile Telecommunications Limited) was established in 1995 as a joint venture between Namibia Post and Telecommunications Holdings (NPTH), Telia and Swedfund. During May 2004, NPTH concluded a deal that saw it hold 100% of the shares in MTC by acquiring the 49% held by Telia Overseas AB and Swedfund International AB. During 2006, the sale of 34% of MTC shares to Portugal Telecom was concluded for N$1.34 billion, while the Namibian government retains the remainder of the stake through NPTH.

MTC currently covers 98% of the population of nearly 2 million citizens with more than 650 base stations and repeaters, and offers a dual band 900/1800MHZ. The company also expanded its cellular coverage to all major towns in Namibia, including the major arterial roads.

It further runs two modern MSCs (mobile switching centres) in Windhoek and Oshakati, with capacity to accommodate rapidly rising number of customers of over 1.3 million active users. MTC also operates the only full service customer contact centre in Namibia dealing with service queries ranging from telephony, SMS, fax, GPRS, data, voicemail and 3G/HSDPA. A staff of 367 persons serves a diverse market of both pre- and post-paid subscribers.
