Elbex Technologies’ intelligent video-monitoring project named Fujitsu 2019 SELECT Innovation Award winner

The project involved deploying a complex system to help customers monitor vehicle movements around its depots in real time, through tracking vehicle licence plates.

Fujitsu Forum Munich, 12 Nov 2019

News facts:

  • Thanks to the deployment of real-time vehicular traffic monitoring and analysis capabilities, Elbex’s major logistics customer benefits from enhanced security at its facilities.
  • Installation includes a sophisticated video management system, which leverages OCR licence plate recognition to link vehicle movements to video clips and location data for future retrieval.
  • The fifth winner of the coveted Fujitsu SELECT Innovation Award, which champions partners who consistently deliver outstanding value to customers by combining their expertise and services with Fujitsu’s extensive product and solution portfolio.

Elbex Technologies has scooped this year’s SELECT Innovation Award at Fujitsu Forum Munich 2019 for its intelligent traffic-monitoring implementation. The project brought together Elbex Technologies’ video processing expertise, optical character recognition algorithms and intelligence with Fujitsu’s PRIMERGY servers to transform passive video surveillance information into a smart data system that delivers real-time insights and enhances planned logistics.

The prestigious Fujitsu SELECT Innovation awards, now in their fifth year, recognise Fujitsu channel partners who consistently deliver outstanding value to customers by combining their expertise and services with Fujitsu’s extensive product and solution portfolio. Selection criteria for winners include the positive effect that digital co-creation has had on a customer’s business, and the extent to which projects bring Fujitsu’s vision of a human-centric intelligent society to life.

Belgian firm Elbex Technologies is a value-added Fujitsu SELECT partner with expertise in the production and distribution of advanced audio and video technologies for security and video processing. Its winning project involved deploying a complex system through integrator ATN/APK-Group to help the customer monitor vehicle movements around its depots in real time, through tracking vehicle licence plates. This was a challenging data management task, given the volume of traffic entering and leaving each facility and the subsequently huge amount of video data generated.

Customer gains flexibility in adjusting freight logistics

Capturing licence plate information relating to every vehicle entering or leaving its facilities enables customer Katoen Natie to identify peak traffic times, then plan and dynamically adjust freight logistics based on the number of vehicles arriving and departing at any given time. The system also provides valuable real-time information relating to, for example, the country of origin of vehicles in addition to detailed reporting and analysis.

Live video streams from the multiple video cameras monitoring each facility are analysed on a series of dedicated Fujitsu servers that extract licence plate information using optical character recognition algorithms. The extracted information is stored in a database alongside thumbnail images of each licence plate, and information relating the colour of each vehicle, its country of origin and reliability score. Video streams are stored in a sophisticated management system, which connects every vehicle movement to the corresponding video clips, making it extremely fast and easy to identify vehicle information when required.

Dave Hazard, Vice-President, Head of Channel Europe at Fujitsu, comments: “This year’s Fujitsu Forum explores how a human-centric approach to the latest digital technologies can help build trust in new business models. The winner of the 2019 Innovation Award, Elbex Technologies, embodies this spirit by taking existing video streams and putting in place a system to bring new value and trust to this previously under-utilised information. Elbex Technologies, a valued Fujitsu SELECT Partner for approximately eight years, truly demonstrates how combined technologies and expertise can create transformative solutions for our customers.”

Bert Waumans, Managing Director at Elbex Technologies, adds: “Working alongside Fujitsu as a SELECT partner has enabled us to respond effectively to a variety of tender requirements with outstanding products and fast support. Our success in partnership lies in a shared philosophy, centred on a mutually respectful and productive relationship. The video-monitoring project is an excellent example of the value that this relationship brings to our customers through the power of our complementary capabilities. By introducing intelligence and data management, we’ve transformed passive video surveillance into a productive asset that delivers new business insights.”

Elbex Technologies received a $10 000 prize, to be used for joint marketing, in addition to being featured in a reference video. The award ceremony, held during Fujitsu Forum Munich, also recognised the outstanding achievements of partners which have excelled over the course of the past year with a host of additional awards, including Europe Best Newcomer Service Provider 2019 and Europe Rising Star Partner 2019.
