Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane hands over computer labs to schools in Limpopo.

Two Limpopo high schools have each received computer lab facilities as part of the back to school campaign.

The labs were handed over to Basopa High School and Masedibu Secondary School by communications minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane yesterday.

Each high school's facility has been equipped with 15 computers, a TV and set-top box (STB). The computers were sponsored by Vodacom and Mustek.

With an intake of over 1 209 learners, Basopa High School is one of the top performing schools in the Vhembe District.

In 2017, the school obtained a matric pass rate of 82.9% and of those learners, 33 managed to get a bachelors pass.

Kubayi-Ngubane expressed her delight in the impressive matric pass rate at the school and encouraged learners to make use of the computers in order to gain maximum benefit.

"I came to not only donate these gadgets but to also encourage the learners on their first day of school. You [learners] must study hard and be focused because education unlocks opportunities."

According to the minister, donating the TV and STB are in line with government's digital migration programme.

The communications ministry has been leading digital migration public awareness campaigns and has handed out STBs to residents of various towns in Limpopo.

The department is also working with the South African Post Office to reach communities to promote public awareness for qualifying households.

The South African government has committed to supply five million TV-owning households with free STBs so they are not left out as the country switches from analogue to digital broadcasting.
