The JSE-listed Altron subsidiary Bytes Technology Solutions unveiled its new enterprise virtual private network (VPN), BytesNet, at an event in Sandton, Johannesburg, yesterday.

Bytes believes this corporate service, which uses the MTN Network Solutions infrastructure, will be a cost-effective alternative to other outsourced network and bandwidth service providers.

Bytes divisional manager Gary Lailvaux says this enhanced network offering will have 20 points-of-presence in SA, all connected to Telkom exchanges.

He adds the BytesNet network employs the latest in multi-protocol label switching, or MPLS - allowing for faster and more reliable access.

"The number one requirement of the customer is reliability," states Mike Brierly, head of MTN NS.

Microsoft's former SA boss, Gordon Fraser (now heading up the software giant's UK office), punted the benefits of software and services being combined, via video-link presentation. Bytes is a Microsoft gold partner.

"People are taking advantage of converged platforms to do a number of things. Even at home consumer-level - like with the Xbox 360 games - going online makes it a far richer experience," said Fraser.

Lailvaux says Bytes, which already offers current-generation VPN services to a number of blue-chip South African corporates, will be able to offer a variety of networking solutions through BytesNet.

"Customers can select their boutique of business solutions - including fully secure, mobile triple-play services."
