German system software provider Software AG said Monday it had entered a strategic partnership with software giant Microsoft to enable users of the Windows operating system to run programs from traditional mainframe computers.
Software said its wholly-owned US subsidiary, Software AG, would bundle its enterprise integration technology with Microsoft's Host Integration Server 2000 to allow the server to run CICS, Natural, and other applications that would not normally work on Windows.
Enterprise integration technology is software that allows various computer systems to communicate with each other.
"(This) would thereby (build) a bridge from the Windows platform to non-Windows enterprise systems," read a statement. "The immediate benefit for Software AG and Microsoft customers is the ability to "plug" any application from virtually any mainframe platform into applications running on a Windows NT server."
Software said it and Microsoft would jointly sell, market, and service the product, which would come out by the third quarter, around the same time as the launch of the Host Integration Server.
Microsoft's Host Integration Server is designed to enable Windows NT-server customers to integrate their existing host applications with the Windows platform.
Software said the partnership would help its Walnut Creek, Calif., subsidiary gain more market visibility and sell more of its products in the United States.
