The changing face of skills development at Comdex 2000

Johannesburg, 18 Sep 2000

With the recent introduction by the government of the training levy, skills development has been a contentious issue in the training and IT industry. The IT Skills Development seminar being held on 4 October 2000 at COMDEX South Africa 2000 at Gallagher Estate will address the issue of IT skills development and competency measurement in IT and related industries.

The seminar sponsored by CompTIA, the Computing Technology Industry Association, will be focussed on HR managers, training officers, IT managers, admin managers working in training and all those involved with the new SETA`s. The seminar is also targeted at senior executives of training companies and suppliers of training products and services.

A full day programme, the seminar will include topics such as the SA Information Industry - Foundation for the Future or Elite (White) Elephant, Certification Programmes, Gambling with Technology (Sun International), Building the National Qualifications Framework, Turning Levies into grants, and International Certifications and the NQF.

The seminar will include a panel discussion on "Making the NQF Work For You". On the panel will be Adrian Schofield, President IISA, Joe Samuels, Director, Standards Setting & Development, SAQA, Mateli Mpuntsha, Executive Officer, ISETT SETA and Wayne Dalton of Microsoft. This panel will give delegates the opportunity to ask questions on the skills development legislation and other skills training issues of concern to them and their business.

Of particular interest will be the key question of when will companies be able to recover their training costs, when will the SETA`s be in place and what can business do to speed up the process.

"This highly focussed seminar will not only address the skills development and competency measurement in IT and related industries, but will also look at the upheaval in the local training market by the slow pace of establishing the SETA`s, and how recognised international standards fit in to the NQF," explains Peter Aspinall, managing director, SBS Conferences, organisers of the seminars and workshops at COMDEX South Africa 2000.

The COMDEX South Africa 2000 Seminars and Workshops run from 3-6 October 2000 alongside the COMDEX South Africa 2000 exhibition and include topics such as Business Continuity, Open Source Software, e-commerce security and IT Project Management.
