Vodacom Tanzania says it is fully co-operating with an investigation led by the Tanzania Police Force.

This follows several Vodacom executives, including MD Hisham Hendi, being questioned by authorities in relation to the alleged fraudulent use of network facilities.

Bloomberg reports that five Vodacom employees, including Hendi, have been charged with allegedly depriving the government of over 11 billion shillings ($4.8 million) in revenue.

It reports that the staff members have been accused of organising a "criminal racket", and also with allowing third-parties unauthorised use of network services.

According to Reuters, Vodacom Tanzania, a subsidiary of SA's Vodacom Group, is Tanzania's leading telecoms company by number of mobile subscribers, with about 32% of the country's 40 million mobile subscribers.

In a statement, Vodacom Tanzania said it would like to reassure its customers that this will not have an impact on service delivery.

It added that measures have been taken to ensure the company's operations continue free of interruptions and disruptions.

It noted it is a responsible corporate citizen upholding the highest standards of business integrity, ethics and good governance.
