Digital transformation is driving the robust demand in the AIM market, says Gartner.
Digital transformation is driving the robust demand in the AIM market, says Gartner.

A significant shift toward digital business models that harness technology trends such as cloud computing, Internet of things (IOT), analytics and artificial intelligence is boosting worldwide spending on application infrastructure and middleware (AIM) market, says research firm Gartner.

Digital transformation efforts will drive AIM spending to reach over $30 billion in 2018, notes the firm. In 2017, the market revenue reached $28.5 billion, an increase of 11.9% from 2016, it says.

"A new approach to application infrastructure is the foundation organisations build their digital initiatives upon, and therefore robust demand in the AIM market is testament to the occurrence of digitalisation, says Fabrizio Biscotti, research vice president at Gartner.

"The more companies move toward digital business models, the greater the need for modern application infrastructure to connect data, software, users and hardware in ways that deliver new digital services or products."

The growing demand for IOT middleware and the evolving maturity of cloud application infrastructure are major factors contributing to the market growth, says Mordor Intelligence.

Market leaders are losing their share due to the increasing competition from open source and cloud providers, it says.

Approximately one-third of application infrastructure and middleware spend comes from small and medium businesses, but they represent almost 90% of the companies in many regional markets, notes Mordor Intelligence.

The AIM market is expected grow even faster in 2018, after which spending growth will slow each year, reaching around 5% in 2022, says Gartner.

Licensed, on-premises application integration suite offerings that make up larger segments served by market incumbents such as IBM and Oracle achieved single-digit growth in 2016 and 2017, it says. Gartner expects this growth to continue through 2022.

"We can generally describe the products in this slow-growing segment as serving legacy applications," says Biscotti.

IBM leads the global application infrastructure and middleware market with a market share of 21.5% and revenue worth 6.1 million in 2017, notes Gartner. North America has been dominating the market and is expected to continue its domination throughout the 2018 to 2023 forecast period, it adds.
