VMware has unveiled additions to its Tanzu portfolio, including VMware Tanzu Mission Control, a single point of control from which customers will manage all their Kubernetes clusters irrespective of where they run.

In addition, the company debuted Project Pacific, which is focused on transforming VMware vSphere into a Kubernetes-native platform. By utilising innovations from both VMware and Pivotal, the company says it is positioned to deliver the most comprehensive enterprise-grade, Kubernetes-based portfolio for modern applications, which will help its customers succeed at each step of their cloud-native journey.

During his keynote address at VMworld 2019 Europe in Barcelona this morning, VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger said the response from customers to its vision for VMware Tanzu and Project Pacific has been positive.

Kubernetes is everywhere, and Gelsinger said there is a huge demand for solutions, services, education and training to help customers harness its full potential and successfully build, run and manage their applications and multi-cloud Kubernetes clusters.

“That demand has resulted in overwhelming customer response for participation in beta programs for both Project Pacific and the VMware Tanzu Mission Control,” he added.

Project Pacific is available to a few chosen customers through an advanced beta program, as demand for participation exceeds availability. However, Gelsinger said the company plans to expand access to the program later this year.

Kubernetes is everywhere and there is a huge demand for solutions, services, education and training to help customers harness its full potential.

Project Pacific unifies VMware vSphere and Kubernetes, which will enable VMware vSphere administrators to deploy and manage Kubernetes and container infrastructure anywhere VMware vSphere runs, with the tools they already know. It will work on-premises, in a hybrid cloud, and on hyperscalers.

In addition, developers will be able to easily manage their application services and deployments using the Kubernetes tools they are already familiar with. The project will feature fully integrated container networking, which can significantly simplify Kubernetes implementation, deployment and management.

Moreover, Project Pacific will include integrated Cloud Native Storage, which will enable developers to provision any vSphere-supported storage on-demand in a fully-automated, scalable fashion.

Another enhancement, VMware Tanzu Mission Control, aims to manage multi-cloud, multi-cluster infrastructure. Also in a closed beta with select customers, VMware Tanzu Mission Control manages conformant Kubernetes clusters from a single control point, no matter where they are running. Operators will be able to set policy for access, back-up, security and more to individual clusters or groups of clusters across environments. Developers will be able to access Kubernetes resources via APIs in a self-service manner.
