Global engineering, project delivery and operations management group, DRA Global (DRA) recently commissioned business management solutions provider and Sage Premier Partner, Lorge Consulting Services, to implement a business management solution at its South African-based head office.

This is not a first-time appointment; the award-winning Sage specialist has been DRA's preferred supplier of business management solutions for several years. "This engagement by DRA is also the largest since the inception of Lorge," said Jonty Katz, COO of Lorge.

DRA, a leading global client

DRA is a diversified global engineering, project delivery and operations management group, with an impressive +30-year track record. Known for its collaborative approach and extensive experience in project origination and delivery, as well as turnkey operations and maintenance services, DRA delivers optimal solutions tailored to meet clients' needs.

With expertise in the areas of project development, mining, mineral processing, plant optimisation, operations and maintenance as well as related water, energy and infrastructure requirements, DRA delivers truly comprehensive solutions to the resources sector. DRA employs over 4 000 people and offers flexible engineering and operations management services worldwide through 16 offices.

The resultant agility and expansion of DRA places intensive demands on management, decision-making, reporting, internal and related processes. This, in turn, creates a need for equally evolving business intelligence software and systems automation. Subsequently, this is where Lorge Consulting Services played a pivotal role, bringing in its knowledge and experience when it comes to Sage systems as well as various business management tools and automation strategies.

The collaboration between the two companies includes prior implementations at DRA head office in South Africa, as well as at their Pittsburgh office situated in the United States. As a result of DRA's growth and diversification strategies, improvements to DRA's software systems need to be implemented to ensure it satisfies present day requirements in the most effective manner.

Lorge was able to provide a solution complementing the immediate and anticipated future requirements of DRA, which is operating in a highly specialised industry, with specific business requirements, including a very agile and diverse environment. The solution provided by Lorge was packaged, customised where necessary, and implemented in accordance with the Sage Enterprise Management framework.

Sage Enterprise Management: a leap forward

Formerly known as Sage X3, Sage Enterprise Management incorporates important business processes into one integrated software design that includes manufacturing, inventory, sales, customer service and financial management features. This software system proves ideal for companies with a strong involvement in mining, manufacturing, distribution, and services sectors. It is fully Web-based, making it quick and easy to use in a familiar Web browser or mobile device. This software system connects customers, suppliers, partners and employees to a common data source, which enables robust collaboration and efficient workflow.

This enterprise resource planning (ERP) system is customisable and Lorge needed to build in certain modifications to tailor the software to the unique systems, procedures and preferences of DRA. Sage Enterprise Management also proves advantageous as it is adaptable and easy to integrate with existing systems. Additionally, it has various features, which allow for future enhancements as the need arises.

Finishing strong

Lorge worked with approximately 30 staff members, who were either directly or indirectly associated with or influenced by the new implementation. Some of the key DRA personnel involved in this implementation included Martin Coetsee, Global ICT Executive (AU); Business System Manager, Sarel Dercksen; and Contract Administrator, Heather Swanepoel (SA). According to Coetsee, the project was completed in October of 2018 and DRA is now equipped with a more efficient and centralised business management system.

Support and training are inclusive within Lorge's product offering. Ongoing assistance from Lorge will form part of the third line of support. The system, although sophisticated in application and benefits, is nonetheless easy to use and allows for independent functioning at most times, unless the need for advanced technical intervention arises.

Due to their in-depth understanding of DRA's business processes, Lorge is considered to be a strategic partner rather than simply a service provider with limited input. According to Coetsee: "The collaboration between Lorge and the DRA project team was key in overcoming the challenges that are usually typical for an ERP implementation and delivering a successful project. I am confident that our partnership, coupled with the impressive technical skills from both teams, will ensure the successful execution of the next phase of the implementation in the Americas and Australia," concluded Coetsee.
