Sentech celebrates Women's Day through voluntary work

It's just over 50 years since about 20 000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the law requiring black women to carry passes.

To celebrate the contribution made by these women to society, Sentech has adopted the Ikhaya Lothando Children's Home, which is under the patronage of the Uitenhage Child and Welfare Centre in the Eastern Cape.

Ikhaya Lothando Children's Home cares for teenage children that are orphaned, abused, homeless and affected and infected by HIV/Aids.

Staff from Sentech's TCC Port Elizabeth offices will celebrate Women's Day by volunteering their hands and hearts to the home and children. The day's activities will include a luncheon, volleyball games and a soccer match between the children and Sentech staff.

They will also attend to urgent maintenance issues at the centre and the children will also receive clothing and soccer balls as gifts.

"We have hosted Women's Day events at the Johannesburg offices in the past, and one of our goals is to involve other regions, so we decided to organise an event outside Gauteng," said Laetitia Vollmer, Sentech's CSI co-ordinator.

By getting involved with the Ikhaya Lothando Children's Home, we hope to improve the children's quality of life. "These children are the future of South Africa and we need to protect them and ensure they are motivated to succeed and get a good education," says Sentech's Portfolio Manager: Corporate Communications Pranill Ramchander.

Sentech is also using Women's Day as an opportunity to get more women involved in the ICT sector. With South Africa facing a skills shortage in this sector, Sentech encourages more females to study ICT subjects and to take up a career in this field.

"We believe this industry can empower the women in South Africa, and having more women in the ICT sector will be a major boost for it," says Ramchander.
