VMware acquires desktop virtualisation start-up

VMware has added to its end-user portfolio with the acquisition of desktop virtualisation start-up Wanova, Cloud Pro reports.

As part of the deal, the virtualisation giant will gain Wanova's Mirage product, which centralises image management by using layering technology within the data centre.

It combines client and server virtualisation to give IT organisations control over end-points while still allowing users the freedom to customise their devices.

According to CBR, VMware Enterprise Desktop VP Jeff Jennings said the acquisition of Wanova will bring together the applications for centralised image management of both physical and virtual desktops.

"This combination has the potential to redefine the desktop virtualisation landscape. By blurring the boundaries of virtual vs physical desktops, the benefits of central image management and persistent user-installed applications can be extended to all systems within a business - physical, virtual, tethered desktops or roaming Mac and PC laptops," said Jennings.

Wanova originally came out with a hybrid desktop-virtualisation platform in 2010 and added enterprise-level features a year later, Tech Week Europe writes.

Mirage 2.0 aims to combine the management and security benefits of a VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) - where most of the components of the platform runs on a central back-end server - and the flexibility needed to enable mobile and remote workers to access the environment, even offline.
