In partnership with the Land Claims Commissioner, the Presidential Hotline facilitated the reimbursement of 96 households in the Eastern Cape.

The Eastern Cape office of the premier says the province improved its response rate for the hotline from 4% in 2010, to a 35.17% response rate in April 2012.

“It's no wonder Eastern Cape citizens are heaping praise at the fast response rate to their queries lodged with the Presidential Hotline.”

The office of the premier adds that it has provided training for public liaison officers in departments and municipalities to equip them with skills that are required to handle customer complaints. It also holds monthly meetings with all the officers to monitor progress on how they are dealing with complaints from customers.

“These are some of the reasons that have led to improvements on the operations of the hotline.”

Nobantu Ntshekisa, from Mpolweni Village, in Alice, has given the Presidential Hotline the thumbs up. “We are thankful to the hotline, and would like to encourage other people to contact the office of the president if they have unresolved queries about service delivery-related matters,” said Ntshekisa in a letter to the hotline.

Ntshekisa is one of 96 people from Mpolweni Village who were forcefully removed from their settlement by the previous government in 1985. After their removal, a dam was built in their place. A few years ago, residents made an application for compensation through the Land Claims Commissioner.

In partnership with the Land Claims Commissioner, the Presidential Hotline facilitated the reimbursement of all 96 households.

The Presidential Hotline was established in September 2009. It receives calls from citizens, which include issues relating to employment/world of work, housing, law-related matters, social services, citizenship, electricity, education, health and basic services. The Presidential Hotline number is 17737.
