Municipality implements centralised DB

The George Municipality has begun the implementation of a centralised database (DB), allowing data to be updated and shared among directorates.

Local IT solutions company RPC Data SA was awarded the R3 million tender for the two-year project in October last year, with operations to begin early this month.

The central repository will allow the municipality to utilise its existing systems, using an Oracle database with online read and write capabilities, says CEO of RPC, Brandon McDonald. The new system will help to avoid unnecessary duplication and storage of information and stamp out administrative losses from erroneous accounts, he says.

The municipality suffered most notably from a disconnection of customer data between each of its four primary directorates: financial services, civil and technical services, planning and development services and electro-technical services, he adds.

As a small municipality, he says, George cannot justify the expense of an enterprise resource planning system, the likes of which the Cape Town municipality recently employed. For this reason RPC tendered a simple, secure, reliable and quick-to-initialise solution, says McDonald.
