Business Objects at the top

Frost & Sullivan's annual Asia Pacific ICT awards has named Business Objects the 'Business Intelligence Vendor of the Year', according to TechWhack.

The award contenders were evaluated based on a variety of actual market performance indicators, which included revenue growth, market share and growth in market share, leadership in product innovation, breadth of products and solutions, major customer acquisitions, and business and market strategy, in addition to other category-specific criteria.

Besides strong financial growth, other milestones for the company in the past six months include the acquisition of enterprise performance management software specialist, Cartesis, and the announcement of its intention to acquire data search and discovery tools developer, Inxight Software, and an expansion of the overall product portfolio.

BI tools vendors maintain positions

The continued acquisitions by major business intelligence (BI) vendors of companies within the BI and adjacent software markets caused the rankings of the largest vendors to remain unchanged, according to BusinessWire.

Although the overall rankings were not affected, the growth rates of the top 15 vendors differed significantly, affecting vendor shares. As in other steadily maturing markets, the share of the top 10 BI tools vendors continues to increase, with Business Objects, SAS, Cognos, Microsoft and Hyperion making up the top five.

IDC expects acceleration in the BI tools market to start in 2009 - what remains to be seen is whether it will be manifested in revenue to software vendors, or simply through the broader reach of BI.

Cognos bestows Platinum Award

Cognos recently awarded Business & Decisions its Platinum Award as best reseller of 2007, reports Euronext.

Business & Decision, the international consulting and systems integration company specialising in BI, customer relationship management and e-business, has received Cognos' 'Platinum Award' as one of its best resellers of 2007. This is the highest distinction in its category.

The partners were rewarded for "their innovative spirit, their influence and their intellectual resources", as well as for their "vision and passion for performance management".

Data warehousing analysts in demand

A Janco salary survey showed that not only are CSO pay cheques getting fatter, but data warehousing is increasingly in demand, reports CSO Online.

For all positions surveyed, the mean total compensation started to move up just slightly at less than 1% in the past 12 months. In medium-sized enterprises, the mean total compensation fell less than 1% from $75 096 to $74 806, but in large enterprises the survey found total compensation increased by close to 2% from $81 078 to $82 498.

While hiring is slowing in large enterprises, positions will begin to open at medium-sized enterprises, Janco predicts, as fourth-quarter compensation within these companies indicates demand is growing.

Aussie police need DW skills

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) will establish a fresh panel of approved service providers to meet its ICT service requirements, says InfoWorld.

The AFP has divided its ICT service requirements into 14 groups, covering everything from strategic planning, architecture, and security to software development, project management, and computer infrastructure support.

Within technical and infrastructure services the AFP requires; network, database and systems specialists are required to develop and support the AFP's data and IP voice infrastructure, Oracle and SQL Server 2005 database environments, and Linux, Unix and Windows operating platforms. Data warehousing and configuration management services are also required.
