Police this week arrested an IT specialist for allegedly defrauding the Compensation Fund (CF) about two years ago, says the Department of Labour (DOL).

The long arm of the law caught up with Kenneth Mahuluhulu, from Pretoria, at his place of work at the University of SA, after two years on the run.

He allegedly defrauded the CF of more than R1 million.

Members of the SAPS Commercial Crime Division, accompanied by officials from the DOL's CF Risk Management Unit, arrested him. He was taken to the Sunnyside Police Station to sign a statement and for fingerprinting. He was later taken to the Pretoria Commercial Crime Court.

“Mahuluhulu has been evading justice since 2010. He faces charges of defrauding the Department of Labour's Compensation Fund of R1.2 million,” says the DOL unit. “He is alleged to have made/facilitated more than five fictitious claims to the DOL's CF, working in collaboration with a syndicate involving a former employee of DOL's Compensation Fund.”

The accused was denied bail and is expected to appear again in court today for the criminal activities alleged to have been committed between 2006 and 2009.

The CF is a public entity under the administration of the Department of Labour. It acts as an insurance provider for workers injured at work.
