When it comes to data security, don`t forget the SME

Johannesburg, 02 Jun 2010

With data security and protection proving to be as important and imperative for CIO and IT managers as ever, the corporate and enterprise world`s spending patterns in the storage space are showing extremely healthy year-on-year growth.

"Unfortunately, however, the one market that needs data security and protection most remains largely neglected by technology vendors that are chasing high-end solutions that address large systems and even larger volumes of data instead," says Levina de Matos, Samsung product manager at Tarsus Technologies.

"That market is of course the SME space, where large Capex budgets are nothing more than a distant dream and the knowledge and intellectual property they`ve built over their life cycle is a key differentiator," continues De Matos.

De Matos says because SMEs represent such small individual budgets, they`ve never been a major focus for technology vendors and their resellers.

"Ironically enough, smaller companies can get away with things that larger companies can`t, and this enables resellers that want to do a little more than simply supply and install computer hardware to add substantial value.

"For example," she explains, "most SMEs need nothing more than a computer-by-computer backup and restore methodology that comprises external hard disks and software that`s either freely available on the Internet or bundled with one of those external disks.

"It`s safe, convenient and cost-effective," she says, "and best of all, because these smaller players in the market don`t tend to have dedicated IT resources, it can be carried out on a regular basis by the users themselves."

Samsung`s new range of external hard drives is perfect for this purpose.

They are cost-effective and extremely versatile, available in a wide range of colours and comprehensive in their coverage of capacity and purpose to ensure there is a solution for everyone.

From the ultra-portable S1 series that offers between 120GB and 250GB of storage space, to the slightly heavier, but still very portable S2 series, which offers between 160GB and 640GB of storage, there are a number of offerings that are perfect for commuters and road warriors.

Then, for those who prefer their backups to be desk-bound, there`s the STORY Station and STORY Station Plus series, which offers between 1TB and 2TB of storage and is available with either a USB 2.0 or combination USB 2.0 and eSATA interface.

There is even a series of drives dedicated to environmentally-conscious users - taking what`s on offer from the S2 series and STORY Station drives and adding a Halogen-free, low-power consumption and whisper-quiet operation.

The ranges, called the G2 and G3 respectively, round off a comprehensive array of drives that fulfil a vital niche in the market.

"With products like these abundantly available and with clear niches to address, resellers have more opportunity to create new value added services and branch out of the traditional box-dropping space.

"And with so much potential for innovative, yet cost-effective and simple solutions to the problems being faced by SMEs today, there`s a wealth of new business to be had," she concludes.
